The following performance opportunities will be available to students during the 2021-2022 academic year.
DURING-SCHOOL PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLES
Beginning Band - An organized class that provides musical performance and study for students with no or limited band experience. The course is designed to develop proficiency in musical performance, an understanding of the art of music, and an appreciation of the creative and intrinsic values of music which can result in a life-long vocation/avocation. Participation in school and public performances is required.
Jazz Combo - Through ensemble rehearsal, individual practice, and a variety of performance opportunities, students will gain an understanding and appreciation through jazz studies. Emphasis will be placed on performance technique, improvisational skills, musicianship, and an exploration in jazz history. Prerequisites for Jazz Combo will be through an audition with Ms. Sanders.
Orchestra - Through performance in a String Ensemble, students will receive guidance in instrumental fundamentals, ensemble skills and musicianship through performance. More specific information regarding the orchestra program will be provided to those registered for that ensemble.
Percussion Ensemble - This group is for percussionists who have had previous band experience and are interested in further developing their ability in the percussive arts. Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of a comprehensive percussion education (snare drum, timpani, keyboards, latin percussion, and drum set), through performance. Members of the Percussion Ensemble will combine with the musicians of the Symphonic Band to perform at concerts, and in additional performance opportunities.
Symphonic Band - Students study instrumental fundamentals, ensemble skills, interpretation, music listening, all while preparing high-quality, ability-appropriate literature. Students are encouraged to study privately. Students are strongly encouraged to pursue many individual opportunities, including Mid-State and All-State bands, among others. The Symphonic Band will perform various concerts and will attend Concert Performance Assessment at Middle Tennessee State University in March.
AFTER-SCHOOL PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES
Marching Band - “The Spirit of Green Hill” Marching Band is a strong force for team spirit and Green Energy in the school. The GHHS Marching Band provides an outlet for members in the realm of state-of-the-art design, performance, social, and competitive opportunities. This ensemble takes place between July and December, performing at all home football games, community parades, and competitions in the Middle TN and the Bands of America circuits.
Membership in the Green Hill High School Marching Band is open to any student participating in one of the GHHS instrumental music program class ensembles. Color Guard is open to students by audition only. For more information, see The Spirit of Green Hill Marching Band 2021-2022 details.
Jazz Band - Through ensemble rehearsal, individual practice, and a variety of performance opportunities, students will gain an understanding and appreciation through jazz studies. Participation is open to all instrumentalists who are interested in learning jazz studies in an afterschool setting.
Pep Band - The Green Hill High School Pep Band supports the Basketball teams at all home games. Students have the opportunity to perform more “modern, rock” style tunes while cheering on the Hawks! Pep Band is encouraged to be outrageous, creative, and high energy whether or not we are playing!
Winter Drumline - This group combines the elements of music performance, marching, and theater in competitive pageantry arts. The season takes place between November and April. The Winter Drumline competes in the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit (SCGC) and Winter Guard International (WGI). An Interest Meeting will take place in October to release additional information. Participation is pending auditions.
Winter Guard - This group provides the Color Guard members an opportunity to continue developing their skills in an indoor performance environment. The season takes place between November and April. The Winter Guard program completes in the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit (SCGC) and Winter Guard International (WGI). An Interest Meeting will take place in October to release additional information. Participation is pending auditions.
Winter Winds - This group is similar to the same performance environment Winter Color Guard and Winter Drumline. Winter Winds brings the same competitive and educational opportunities to students in the winds section. The season takes place between November and April. The Winter Guard program completes in the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit (SCGC) and Winter Guard International (WGI). An Interest Meeting will take place in October to release additional information. Participation is pending auditions.
Chamber Ensembles - Several student-led chamber ensembles provide students with the opportunity to perfect music in a small group setting, and calls them to take total ownership of the music. It is the ultimate in cooperative learning and draws upon and directly applies their musical knowledge in new and profound ways. These ensembles take place during or before school. Chamber Ensembles include but are not limited to: Brass Quintet, Saxophone Quartet, Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, Flute Choir.
